  6. The images on the Hawaiian Design Elements Hawaiiana CD are divided into folders consisting of Background/Textures, Leis/borders, Illustrations (Color & Black & White) and images, all in high resolution and low resolution formats. use the full color insert to find the categorized images.

  36. Printing Images

  38. Printing a document containing clip art is just like printing any other document. The images will look great whether you are using a color or black & white printer. There are a couple of issues you should be familiar with:

  40. Printing as Grayscale: When printing a document with a color image, you should specify Color/Grayscale, regardless of whether your printer is capable of printing in color. Not doing so may not give you the shading you expect in print.

Image File links: Clip art images you've placed will always appear in your document when you view it on-screen. But certain programs will link the clip art image files to your document and require the files themselves in order to print the images properly. In these cases, it will easiest to copy the relevant graphics files to your internal hard drive - specifically, to the same folder as the main document - prior to printing.

  44. Inkjet Printers: If you are using a StyleWriter or other inkjet (non-postscript) printer, the clip art images in your document will print just as they appear on screen.

  46. To use Hawaiian Design Elements volume 2 images when printing to a desktop printer or film recorder:
  47.     1.    Locate the desired image(s) in the full color printed catalog. 
  48.     2.    Copy the desired image(s) from the CD-ROM disc to your hard disk.
  49.     3.    Open or import the image(s) in your desktop publishing, graphics, or presentation program.
  50.     4.    Make sure you have the necessary printer driver selected for the particular device.
  51.     5.    Print a sample page to ensure that the results are correct.
  52.     6.    Print out the page(s) or slide(s) to the device by following the instructions provided by with your page layout program.

  58. Listed below are some of the frequently asked questions you might have using Hawaiian Design Elements Clip-art, along with solutions to each. You should also consult the user guide for the application you are using for answers to common problems associated with importing graphics.

  61. "Nothing happens when I double-click the clip-art."
  62. Remember that Clip-art images are not applications. So double-clicking a clip art image from the desktop will, more than likely, not generate the desired result. See instructions earlier in this document on importing Graphics into your document.

  65. "I can't seem to import images into my document."
  66. Most word processing and desktop publishing programs rely on translators (sometimes called filters) to import (or place) images into a document.
  67. These translators should have been installed along with the word processing or desktop publishing software. But if installing translators was an option, you may have elected not to do so at the time. To resolve this problem, you may try re-installing your software.

  70. "Why can't I change the colors of the images?"
  71. Word processing and desktop publishing programs will place the entire image without giving you access to the individual pieces. But if you have a graphics program, you can make numerous changes, including changes to colors.
  72. To edit Jpeg files use a program such as Adobe Photoshop or PhotoPaint.
  73. To edit Vector art saved as EPS (Mac) images use a program such as Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator or Freehand.

  76. "Some images look jagged when I print them on my inkjet printer."
  77. If you do not have a postscript compatible printer (most laserprinters), vector images may look jagged when printed.
  78. All of the Vector images (EPS) are also saved as JPEG images. These JPEG images will print better on non-postscript printers (ink-jet Printers).

  80. If JPEG images appear jagged, you should try making them smaller.  Most images on this CD were not intended for printing larger than 8.5 X 11.

  83. "What is the difference between the high resolution files and low resolution files images I find on my Hawaiian design Elements CD?"
  84. Every volume contains both high and low resolution versions of the images pictured in the printed catalog pages included with the CD-ROM.  The low resolution images are screen resolution (72 pixels per inch)  JPEG-compressed RGB TIFF files.  They are ideal for laser comps, for position only (FPO) layouts and on-screen previews of image quality.  The high resolution images are print quality (300 pixels per inch) JPEG-compressed RGB TIFF files.  Once decompressed, these images can be converted to CMYK, saved to your hard drive, digitally manipulated and ultimately placed into your page layout program.

  87. "Can I make the image larger or smaller?"
  88. Yes. Depending upon the word processor or desktop publishing program you're using, you can resize the image, generally by clicking it and dragging inward on the handle in the lower right corner of the image. In some programs, you'll need to hold down the shift key. See your program's user manual for details.

  91. "Why can I edit some images and not others?"
  92. In order to edit the colors, shape or format of these images, you will need some sort of image editing software. photoshop, freehand or illustrator are examples of some image editing programs that will work just fine. Both a photo-editing (Photoshop) program and vector editing program (Freehand, Illustrator) will be needed to edit all of the images

  95. "My documents do not print properly unless I leave the CD-ROM in my machine. The problem is, I'm using clip art from several CD-ROM's."
  96. Many programs do not insert all of the data for graphics into their documents. Instead, they make links to the graphics files. Consequently, the graphics files need to be available when the main document is printed.
  97. If you are linking graphics from several CD-Roms, or are are using a particular graphic often, it will be easiest to copy the relevant graphic file(s) to your internal hard drive╤specifically, to the same folder as the main document╤prior to printing.
